Watch any YouTube walking tour, or read any review of Lisbon, Portugal and it will usually feature a trendy-looking street with the road surface painted Pink!
This is of course the famous “Pink Street”. Known by the locals as Rua Cor-de-Rosaor or to give it its official name, Rua Nova do Carvalho.
Pink Street was created in its current form in 2011 when an urban renewal project decided to paint the paving and road surfaces running down the centre of the bars and clubs pink.
Rua Nova do Carvalho is located in the Cais do Sodré district of Lisbon, this area is also home to the very popular Time Out food court in the Mercado da Ribeira.
Before the 2011 facelift, the area was a red-light district known for its brothels and seedy bars, it was a hangout for prostitutes, sailors and criminals.
It has since gone on to become one of Lisbon’s trendiest and most popular late-night destinations and The New York Times included it among its 12 favourite streets to visit in Europe.
